Sweet Little Vintage Advertising Approaches

In 2009 we are worried about the climate and mercury and 13-year-old dads.  But while I was at the New York Transit Museum today I sat on a vintage subway car, and read a vintage ad, circa 1955 (?).  I was reminded of a time when advertisers simply warned about children in traffic, clear as a bell, stating:

Parents…for safety’s sake…teach children

  • Cross streets only at corners!
  • Be careful on errands!

With a little vintage graphic of a mangled child lying next to a car in a pool of blood, dropped groceries by his side.

It made me yearn for the days of these advertising strategies.  I think these were my people.

  1. you know, nowadays that would be considered “too graphic” to be shown to the general public. i constantly want to remind those people that life IS graphic, and hiding that won’t change anything.

  2. I think there’s something to be said for having a drawing/lithograph instead of a photo or a video. It softens the blow of the dead child somewhat 🙂 Have you ever seen the ads in the UK telling people to stop speeding (the Think! road safety campaign)? They feature small children coming back to life and are really creepy but cool.

  3. I’m a little late on this comment – but there was a super creepy bike safety video done in the 50’s it’s on YouTube but I can’t remember what it’s called now. All these kids ride their bikes around in money masks and each gets killed off doing something stupid in traffic. Highly disturbing but effective I guess! A band (Goddamn Electric Bill) used the video footage for one of their songs which was pretty cool.

  4. The child lying in the street is too brutal. I think there is no need for a picture and parent can understand the ad.
